Big Brother U.S. Government Subpoenaed Amazon.com to Obtain Book Purchasing Records of Customers

Newly unsealed court records have revealed that the U.S. government issued a subpoena to Amazon.com seeking to obtain the identities of customers purchasing books through the Amazon marketplace. The snooping attempt was blocked by U.S. Magistrate Judge Stephen Crocker who wrote in a recently-unsealed ruling, "Well-founded or not, rumors of an Orwellian federal criminal investigation into the reading habits of Amazon's customers could frighten countless potential customers into canceling planned online book purchases."

George (Orwell) Bush was at his double-speak worst at the White House yesterday following the revelation that his accusations about an Iranian nuclear weapons program turn out to be as accurate as his accusations about Saddam's weapons of mass destruction.

What was the lesson the president drew from the new National Intelligence Estimate that Iran does not and has not had a weapons program since 2003? It is a "warning signal" according to the president. It means that Iran is "dangerous" and a "threat to peace."

In other words, before the release of the new NIE, Bush -- and his neocon allies -- wanted to attack Iran. After the release of the new NIE Bush -- and his neocon allies -- want to attack Iran. But hey, when have facts ever gotten in the way of this administration?

The White House needs to shut up with its threats and saber rattling and start talking with Iran. Threats empower the hawks in Tehran with Bush's favorite weapon -- fear -- while marginalizing those who argue for negotiations and compromise. Negotiations get results. Just ask the Europeans. According to the new NIE, Iran suspended its nuclear weapons program in the fall of 2003. This is precisely when Iran and European negotiators began to talk.

Hundreds get sick from Gardasil cancer vaccine

MORE than 17 girls a week have been experiencing adverse reactions such as seizures and numbness after taking cervical cancer vaccine Gardasil since it became widely distributed in April.

But the Department of Health and Ageing, while revealing the number of reactions, is refusing to release the details of them - despite growing controversy overseas, including links to at least seven deaths.

There have been previous reports in Australia of young girls fainting, experiencing seizures, dizzy spells and paralysis, including 20 students at a Melbourne private school who reported being sick after having an injection in late May.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal that as of November 30 there have been 496 adverse reaction reports filed to the Therapeutic Goods Association (TGA).

Of those, 468 of the reported cases had the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine as the sole suspected cause.

In the US there have been reports of up to 1700 women suffering adverse reactions after being vaccinated.

Ex-Italian President: Intel Agencies Know 9/11 An Inside Job

Former Italian President and the man who revealed the existence of Operation Gladio Francesco Cossiga has gone public on 9/11, telling Italy's most respected newspaper that the attacks were run by the CIA and Mossad and that this was common knowledge amongst global intelligence agencies.

Cossiga was elected President of Italian Senate in July 1983 before being winning a landslide 1985 election to become President of the country in 1985.

Cossiga gained respect from opposition parties as one of a rare breed - an honest politician - and led the country for seven years until April 1992.

Cossiga's tendency to be outspoken upset the Italian political establishment and he was forced to resign after revealing the existence of, and his part in setting up, Operation Gladio - a rogue intelligence network under NATO auspices that carried out bombings across Europe in the 60's, 70's and 80's.

H.R 1955: the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007 recently passed by the House—a companion bill is in the Senate—is barely one sentence old before its Orwellian moment:

It begins, “AN ACT - To prevent homegrown terrorism, and for other purposes.”

Those whose pulse did not quicken at “other purposes” have probably not read George Orwell’s essay, “Politics and the English Language,” or they voted for the other George both times.
Orwell’s jeremiad on the corruption of the English language and its corrosive effect on a democracy was written two years before his novel 1984 spelled out in chilling detail the danger of Newspeak, which renders citizens incapable of independent thought by depriving them of the words necessary to form ideas other than those promulgated by the state.

After its opening “tribute” to Orwell, H.R 1955 is strategically peppered with Newspeak regarding the establishment of a National Commission and university-based Centers of Excellence to “examine and report upon the fact and causes of violent radicalization, homegrown terrorism, and ideologically based violence in the United States” and to make legislative recommendations for combating it.

Yet another of my pens has just disappeared from where I swear I just left it and is probably already with my smug doppelganger in a parallel universe. We all have our favourite take on the existence of parallel worlds; it's a subject that has been fodder for science-fiction writers for quite a while now. The question is whether the idea has a place in serious scientific discourse.

Well, it seems the only known recordings of a physicist who predicted the existence of parallel universes have been found in his rockstar son's basement. The tapes document how quantum physicist, Hugh Everett III, developed a remarkable idea at the age of 24 while a graduate student at Princeton in 1957. The recordings are believed to have been made at a conference 20 years later, and were discovered during the making of a documentary in which Mark Everett, the physicist's son and singer of the band Eels, attempts to understand the work that consumed his father.
